Iceberg lettuce is a crisp and refreshing variety of lettuce known for its tightly packed, pale green leaves. To grow iceberg lettuce from seeds, follow these steps:

1. Choose the Right Time and Location : Iceberg lettuce thrives in cool weather, so it's best to plant it in early spring or late summer in most regions. Select a location with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil.

2. Prepare the Soil : Work the soil to a depth of about 6-8 inches, removing any rocks, weeds, or debris. Mix in organic compost or well-aged manure to improve soil fertility and drainage.

3. Sow the Seeds : Plant iceberg lettuce seeds directly into the prepared soil. Sow the seeds thinly, about ¼ to ½ inch deep, and space them about 12 inches apart in rows that are 18 to 24 inches apart.

4. Watering : Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the seeds gently immediately after planting and continue to water regularly, especially during dry periods. Avoid overhead watering to prevent diseases.

5. Thinning : Once the seedlings emerge and develop their first true leaves, thin them to ensure proper spacing. Leave the healthiest seedlings and remove any weak or crowded ones. Proper spacing allows each plant to develop fully.

6. Fertilizing : Iceberg lettuce doesn't require much fertilizer, but you can apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer sparingly if your soil lacks nutrients. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer package carefully.

7. Weed Control : Keep the area around the lettuce plants free from weeds, as they can compete for nutrients and water. Regularly remove any weeds by hand or with a hoe, being careful not to disturb the lettuce roots.

8. Harvesting : Iceberg lettuce typically matures in about 70 to 90 days after planting. Harvest the heads when they feel firm and solid, usually when they reach a size of 6 to 8 inches in diameter. Cut the heads at the base with a sharp knife, leaving the roots in the ground to decompose and enrich the soil.

By following these steps, you can successfully grow crisp and delicious iceberg lettuce from seeds in your garden. Enjoy the satisfaction of harvesting your own fresh, home-grown produce!
